Our Story

A passion project between Chef Adam Evans and Chef Luke Joseph, Current Charcoal Grill pays homage to the vast range of flavors, ingredients, and techniques of Asian cuisine and the bounty of the Pacific. 


"Current" is a reference to the Kuroshio Current found in the Pacific Ocean and “Charcoal Grill” alludes to the centuries-old Japanese grilling tradition of using slow-burning Binchotan charcoals – the centerpiece of our menu.


At the forefront of our cuisine is sustainably sourced seafood from the Gulf, accompanied by quality produce and proteins from local farmers and purveyors.


Modern and refined, the thoughtfully designed interiors by Suzanne Humphries Evans offer a visual translation of the restaurant’s Asian inspired menu, speaking to both land and sea. 


Located in the heart of downtown Birmingham, AL near Railroad Park and adjacent to Red Mountain Theatre, guests can expect a vibrant atmosphere and ever-changing menu.
